WAGEC CREATES SAFE FUTURES FOR ALL WOMEN AND FAMILIES BY WORKING TO END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN A GENERATION.

Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC) is a feminist, grassroots organisation that supports women and families in crisis and advocates for social change in the community. We are based in Redfern, Sydney and work on the lands of the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora Nation.

Every night, we support 200 women and children impacted by homelessness, domestic violence and systemic disadvantage. We do this by providing material aid, case management, biopsychosocial support, accommodation, and crisis responses. Equally we seek to address the underlying causes of gender-based violence through primary prevention activities with communities and private and public entities that want to be a part of the global movement to end gender based violence in a generation.

Helping Children Heal provides specialist support for children and young people whose lives have been impacted by domestic and family violence. The program builds positive childhood experiences to create resilience and promote recovery and healing from trauma. The program is available to families in WAGEC’s refuge, outreach and broader community.

Through early intervention we can improve a child’s school readiness and educational engagement. We do this by facilitating homework tutoring and school holiday activities, ensuring that children maintain a sense of normalcy, connection and fun while addressing their educational, developmental and social needs. By facilitating access to therapeutic supports such as health care, psychology, and occupational and speech therapy, we can help them access the help they need to thrive.
